Artist statement:
Solaris celebrates the beauty of mathematical systems in two concentric neckpieces made from wavy lengths of folded paper in yellow, pink and white interlaced like luminous braids in perpetual movement.
The work exemplifies a jewellery making approach that has intuitively evolved over many years of experimentation comprising methodical processes in which strips of paper are perforated by hand according to sequences of millimetre measurements to determine each fold. For Solaris, 6 strips of 500mm lengths of paper were woven at one time onto stainless steel cable with new strips introduced at various intervals to create a seamlessly folded strand. Both neckpieces total 600 strips.
The precision involved in this making process is amplified in Solaris with the development of a new mathematical system or ‘code’ to create a wavy, undulating length of folded paper. Building on the comparatively simpler codes for straight and curved strands in previous neckpiece designs, the idea to devise a wavy strand significantly tested my tacit knowledge and skills. Refining the code encompassed extensive sampling of mathematical calibrations to achieve the ideal balance and proportion in the interlaced form and in the relationship between the two neckpieces.
The beauty of mathematical systems is an endless source of inspiration in my work. Essentially this is a search for a classical sense of beauty that stems from proportional order and harmony of interrelating elements to create a whole. Engaging with the possibilities of mathematical systems to explore innovative forms of visual harmony sustains my practice. The process is joyful with new discoveries continuing to surprise. Solaris epitomises this enduring presence of mystery and delight in my work.
